You may have read Surfaced, but A Handmaid’s Tale is a must-read. East of Eden may be my favorite book of all time.

As a comment, I’ll reorder and classify your list following my own preferences and biases:
First, the “must-read” titles in priority order:
Middlemarch by George Eliot
Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky
Parade’s End by Ford Madox Ford
Call It Sleep by Henry Roth
Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison
East of Eden by John Steinbeck
Second, some quite good reading but not high priority:
Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
A Death in the Family by James Agee
Appointment in Samarra by John O’Hara
Time’s Arrow by Martin Amis
Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel
The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
And of course, the entertainments for when you need to rest the gray cells:
The Woman in Black by Susan Hill
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt
Sweet Tooth by Ian McEwan
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
Jeeves and the Wedding Bells by Sebastian Faulks
I have read A Dance To the Music of Time a couple of times and suggest reading the complete text without undue delays between books, so Hearing Secret Harmonies by Anthony Powell should receive high priority. Then you can start to reread Powell.

Hi there. I’ve been poking around your blog a bit; good stuff. (After seeing Cathy’s comments, it must be via her blog that I’ve found yours!) I definitely concur with The Handmaid’s Tale — a must-read!

As I Lay Dying is one of my all time favourites ( I love Faulkner) and Time’s Arrow is a great read, Amis when he was at his finest I think.

Thanks Cathy – I’m always interested in getting other people’s book recommendations. I’ve had both of the books you mention sat unread on the shelf for far too long… Oh, for more reading time!

Oh I know the feeling too well! I’d also love to re-read so many books, both of these being some of them, but i just don’t have time for that at all.
